How it works

How IV therapy works, in one page

The entire argument for an infusion is delivery. Not a special ingredient, not a secret formula, just the fact that going straight into a vein skips the step where your gut decides how much of something you actually get. Once that is clear, most of the marketing in this field sorts itself out.

  • Delivery, not a magic ingredient
  • The gut is the bottleneck
  • Read this before the rest

Oral versus intravenous

Why the same nutrient behaves differently by vein

Swallow a vitamin and it has to survive stomach acid, cross the gut wall, and pass through the liver before it reaches general circulation. Each of those steps removes some of it, and for several nutrients the fraction that gets through is both small and unpredictable from one person to the next.

An infusion starts in the bloodstream. That is the whole difference: not a better molecule, the same molecule arriving in a quantity you can actually predict. For fluid and electrolytes it also arrives on a timescale drinking cannot match, which is a separate and larger advantage.

What does not change is what the nutrient does once it is there. Magnesium does not become something else because it arrived by vein. See what is in a drip and IV versus oral hydration. More on that in iv therapy guides.

Step by step

What happens between the bag and your bloodstream

  1. Gravity, not a pump

The bag hangs above you and gravity does the work. Height and the roller clamp set the rate, which is why your nurse can slow it in a second without any equipment.

  2. Through the drip chamber

The chamber lets your nurse see the rate as drops rather than guess at it, and it stops air continuing down the line. It is the part people watch for the whole hour.

  3. Into a vein in your arm

The cannula is a soft flexible tube, not a needle. The needle guides it in and is withdrawn immediately, which is why the line stops being noticeable once it is taped.

  4. Around your body in a minute

Your circulation completes a loop in roughly a minute, so what enters the line is distributed quickly. That is also why the rate matters: arriving too fast is what causes the flush people report.

The honest limits

What an infusion does not do

It does not treat a diagnosed condition, and this site will not claim it does. It does not clear toxins out of you; your liver and kidneys do that work continuously and an infusion does not accelerate them. It does not do anything for a nutrient you already have enough of.

It also does not substitute for sleep, food or seeing a physician about a symptom. Most of the disappointment in this field comes from someone expecting one of those four things and being sold it.

What it genuinely does is deliver fluid, electrolytes and certain nutrients quickly and completely. See side effects and choosing a provider. The rest sits in athletes and iv recovery.

Common questions

How IV therapy works: common questions

Absorption, speed, what changes and what stays the same.

Not better, more predictable. Swallowing means your gut decides how much gets through, and for several nutrients that fraction is small and varies between people. An infusion starts in the bloodstream, so the amount that arrives is the amount given.
For fluid and electrolytes, considerably, because you are not limited by how quickly your gut can move water. For vitamins, faster to arrive does not necessarily mean faster to notice anything, and honest providers say so.
No. Your liver and kidneys do that continuously and an infusion does not accelerate them. That claim is common in this category and it is not supported.
If you were genuinely short of fluid, usually yes and often while the bag is still running. If you were not short of anything, probably very little, which is the honest answer rather than a disappointing one.
Not for standard wellness infusions. The bag hangs above you and gravity does the work, with the roller clamp setting the rate. That is why your nurse can slow it instantly without any equipment.
No. The needle guides a soft flexible tube into the vein and is withdrawn immediately. What stays is the tube, taped in place, which is why most people stop noticing it.

Read this before booking and arrived knowing what I wanted. The nurse said that almost never happens.

The bit about toxins being a myth is on their own sales site. That is why I trusted the rest.

Finally understood why the plain bag is cheap and the coenzyme one is not.

Longer than I wanted, and I read all of it. That is probably the point.

If a drip still makes sense for your reason after reading this, booking takes a couple of minutes. If it does not, that is a useful outcome too.
